Perfect Bound Karma's Mission Statement

Perfect Bound Karma is an online venue dedicated to being a space to positively promote contemporary poetry. We feel there is a need to encourage and promote poets, poetry, and presses in order to help readers find emerging, established, and as yet unknown talent sans capitalism.

The premise driving Perfect Bound Karma’s positive energy comes from years spent in academia and food service (mostly food service): If you have one negative experience, you will tell nine people. If you have one positive experience, you will only tell two people. Now this isn’t to say we’re going to be moved by and write a review for every poet who graces us with their work. At Perfect Bound Karma, we demand excellence and originality; our time, like yours, is valuable. In this space, we invoke the advice of our kindergarten teachers: if we can’t say something nice, we won’t say anything at all. Negative comments posted after positive reviews defeat our purpose, so we reserve the right to delete them. There is a time and a place for negative critical analysis and constructive criticism, but it is not here. Here, there is only good karma, a focus on the positive in poetry.

Our reviews at Perfect Bound Karma will not be focused on the academic; there are plenty of places for those reviews. We are more interested in the joy these books create and in sharing that joy with the rest of the world. Of course, these reviews are only one opinion, but what else can a review be but an opinion?

Guidelines

For a Book Review:

Perfect Bound Karma is always looking for new books of poetry to review. Our first rule is that we won’t review any book past its terrible two’s. Our only requirement is to make the ground under our bookshelves shake. We love everything from the traditional to the experimental as long as it is done with style. We are willing to review both full-length books and chapbooks. If you want to have a book considered for a review, please drop us an email for mailing information (perfectboundkarma(at)gmail(dot)com). Any book sent with a SASE will be returned if we decide against reviewing it. If we do review your book, we will be holding it hostage until your send us your next masterpiece. Just kidding, if we love your book, we won't give it up no matter the ransom. We are also willing to consider other mediums for review; please query.

For a Book Reviewer:

Perfect Bound Karma is a very small operation, but encourages submissions of book reviews for possible publication on our site. We don’t want long-winded papers, we want the reason these poems made you happy. If you are interested in submitting a review for Perfect Bound Karma, drop us an email and tell us what you’re reviewing and why you wanted to review that book (perfectboundkarma(at)gmail(dot)com). If we like what we hear, we’ll ask for the whole thing and go from there.

Perfect Bound Karma is only a book review site. Submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or anything else will be deleted unread.
